The Ravelco Anti-theft Device was developed in Houston, Texas in 1976. The effectiveness of the Ravelco Anti theft Device was tested on September 25, 2001 in Mexico City when the Ravelco was put to the test by CESVI-MEXICO, a company owned by the seven major insurance companies in Mexico. Professional thieves were employed to try to hot-wire the most stolen vehicle in Mexico City at that time, a 2002 Nissan Sentra that had a Ravelco installed on it. The CESVI Company said they would approve Ravelco if it took more than 8 minutes to bypass, i.e., the "8-minute test". After trying for 35 minutes and cutting many wires, the thieves finally gave up. The next day, the vehicle was towed to a Nissan dealer and required rewiring before it would start. Every other car alarm, tracking system, and anti theft device tested was bypassed in under 3 minutes. This test alone shows why the Ravelco has been so successful in protecting customer's vehicles since 1976.

One of Ravelco's most successful dealers is Lawrence Marshall Chevrolet in Hempstead, Texas, the nation's largest Chevrolet dealer and a Ravelco customer since 1981. The nation's largest GMC dealer, John Wiesner Inc., also carries the Ravelco. Car dealers who carry the Ravelco consistently report that it outsells factory alarm systems nearly 3 to 1.
